The Christmas Blessing

The Christmas Blessing

As you get into the spirit of Christmas

what is it that you see off in a distance?

you may be able to praise God and witness

the good and magnificent silence.

As we give our gifts here at Christmas time

It is the time to think of giving not receiving,

Yes, It’s a time to receive gift too but give time

to the Lord at the same time you are receiving.

The side of giving gifts is so miraculous

with the good and surprising facial expressions

on the members of your family faces,

which are gracious

which leaves you with a wonderful impression.

Bells on Christmas Day

Bells on Christmas Day
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was filled with sorrow at the tragic death of his wife in a fire in 1861. The Civil War broke out the same year, and it seemed this was an additional punishment. Two years later, Longfellow was again saddened to learn that his own son had been seriously wounded in the Army of the Potomac.

Sitting down to his desk, one Christmas Day, he heard the church bells ringing. It was in this setting that Longfellow wrote these lines:

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men!

Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
“There is no peace on earth,” I said;
“For hate is strong
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.”

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep.
“God is not dead, nor doth he sleep!
The wrong shall fail,
The right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men!”

— Pulpit Helps, 12-92, p. 23

A Christmas Quote

A Christmas Quote…
Whose heart doth hold the Christmas glow
Hath little need of Mistletoe;
Who bears a smiling grace of mien
Need waste no time on wreaths of green;
Whose lips have words of comfort spread
Needs not the holly-berries red—
His very presence scatters wide
The spirit of the Christmastide.
~John Kendrick Bangs (1862-1922), “The Christmas Spirit” (December Twenty-fourth), The Cheery Way: A Bit of Verse For Every Day, 1920

At Chistmas Time

At Christmas Time
~ Traditional English Poem

At Christmas time, we deck the hall
With holly branches brave and tall,
With sturdy pine and hemlock bright
And in the Yule log’s dancing light
We tell old tales of field and fight
At Christmas time.

At Christmas time we pile the board
With flesh and fruit and vintage stored,
And mid the laughter and the glow
We tread a measure soft and slow,
And kiss beneath the mistletoe
At Christmas time.
